Forever Evergreen
Forever Evergreen
was my 21st song, written in July of 1980 when I was 20.
I had been raised in a small rural town on a chicken ranch,
had been a Cub & Boy Scout & was taught to appreciate nature.
I could see the Los Angeles smog encroaching on the valley.
Here is the original recording I made at my friend, Dave Flowers house.
I did what we called a double track, where I recorded guitar & vocal
on one tape, which I played back on Dave's machine, as I played a
Recorder Woodwind to a second tape machine. It was pretty rough,
but got the point across. On this version, I used a keyboard for
the Recorder part. Although I still have my Alpine Recorder,
I just couldn't give a good performance often enough to record.
I'll keep practicing & include it somewhere.
I used my iphone voice memos to record some of the
sound effects like my Stihl MS180c chainsaw
at the beginning, birds at the bird feeder throughout
(hear the woodpecker at the end?)
and the rain & thunder during the middle instrumental section.

I always try to stick to 8 tracks for simplicity, control & quality.
1. Drum machine pattern
2. sound effects, saw, birds & rain
3. Egg shakers & Tambourine
4. Acoustic guitar 1
5. Acoustic guitar 2
6. Vocal & keyboard Recorder overdub
7. Piano
8. Bass
