ONE
Beside me tonight
We dream of unity
Come the morning light
We're living harmony.
It's just understood
We've got to take a stand
We're sharing peace with every land.
Sun's shining bright
Happy as can be
Walking the park
Seeing what we'll see
Why are people there
Bickering and hating
Can't they see it's their lives
They are wasting?
If good is understood
Bad will never stand
Give us love in every land.
We are really One you see
We've just begun eternity
The doors of love are opening
We've cut the lock and crushed the key.
We are really One you see
And each of us has dignity
It's time to choose your destiny
Come One and all
And live the dream.

Notes
I originally wrote this song in 1981
shortly after John Lennon was murdered.
Playboy & Rolling Stone magazines ran some
final interviews & photos of he & Yoko and I
was struck by their love & unity. I think one
of the interviews pictured them in New York's
Central Park hence my reference to a park.
Lennon's spirit inspired me in so many ways
musically, politically & philosophically and really
shaped my world view. Betty & I have tried to live lives
of kindness and empathy. In reworking this song in 2023, I
decided to reimagine the lyrics as well & hopefully
made them more meaningful & mature, 40 years on!
Today, with all the culture war division, book banning's,
threats & intimidation of those demonized as "different",
it seemed a good time for a song about unity and getting along.
Life is too short to waste time trying to make someone else miserable.
We're all in this together with One world to share.
Unity is key, to save humanity.
Everything starts with One & it grows from there.
Be the change you want to see in the world.
