R.I.P TOM PETTY
American Girl is the opening song on one of my favorite movies from 1982 : Fast Times At Ridgemont High & is also one of my favorite Tom Petty songs.
I was of those times. I knew people like that. And we listened to Tom Petty. When we lost him on October 2nd 2017, it kind of closed that chapter in time. The youth and exuberance from then,is passing to a new generation of now. The fun, the infinite possibility, when all lies ahead of you & you can do or be anything! Was it just optimistic hope? Funny,it's not something you think of, when you're in the middle of it. Tom's work with the Heartbreakers is where he left his biggest impression on me,but he had a number of incarnations. Notably as a member of the super group The Traveling Wilburys . You may remember
Handle with care or a duet with Stevie Nicks, Stop dragging my heart around. He performed at an event I attended in the 1980's: Peace Sunday that featured some of the greatest artists of the time. In one of the bands I played in as a teenager, The Hole in the Wall Gang, we played his song I Need to Know. Tom,you've gone too soon & we'll miss you. You've left your mark. Hope you're jamming eternally with
brother Wilburys George & Roy. Below is my attempt at playing American Girl.

Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers Lyrics
"American Girl"
Well, she was an American girl
Raised on promises
She couldn't help thinkin'
That there was a little more to life somewhere else
After all it was a great big world
With lots of places to run to
And if she had to die tryin'
She had one little promise she was gonna keep
O yeah, all right
Take it easy, baby
Make it last all night
She was an American girl
Well it was kind of cold that night,
She stood alone on her balcony
Yeah, she could hear the cars roll by,
Out on 441 like waves crashin' on the beach
And for one desperate moment
There he crept back in her memory
God it's so painful when something that's so close
Is still so far out of reach
O yeah, all right
Take it easy, baby
Make it last all night
She was an American girl
